Can I Get a Groupthink?

April 1, 2010

Erykah Badu has always been someone I admired, from her loving maternal expression to her cultural lyrics, she is admired by many. I sport her albums, follow her on twitter and enjoy the things she has to say.

Before her video was up for controversy via news, she would tweet about the word groupthink. “What is groupthink?”, she asked via twitter? She explained she would follow people on twitter who defined the words in their own way. I immediately thought of groupthink as a slave mentality. Where one or more persons make a statement of their feelings and wants others to join them in that same thought.

In my opinion, “groupthink” is a part of human behavior joining the leader and the followers. This is American Culture at its best. Government, a governed thinking, voting, persuading, brainwash, etc.

I think it was genius how Erykah created an example of “groupthink” by shooting her video the way she did. Nudity is natural. She wasn’t doing anything sexual, she just stripped and fell to the ground, exposed. Thereafter including a message and symbolizing death in comparison to JFK’s assassination disclaiming it for everyone stating, via Twitter, “fatbellybella:  i would never disrespect JFK . his revolutionary thinking is my inspiration. my performance art has been grossly misinterpreted by many. .”

I enjoy how the media and others are coming together saying what a pity and disgust she displays, giving a prime example of groupthink. But in my mind I think about the other music videos where people are nude and their parts are blurred out as well. Like Alanis Moorisette’s Thank You.

All in all, I’d say, big up to Erykah and her form of expression. I will pick up your album today and I love your new single!
